When you add new flooring – especially if it’s thicker than what was there before, or laid on top of an existing layer – the floor level rises slightly. That can cause doors to scrape, stick, or not open fully if there isn’t enough clearance at the bottom.
Before installation, it’s smart to measure the gap under doors and compare it to the thickness of the new material plus any underlay. If it’s tight, you can plan to trim doors, adjust frames, or choose a slightly thinner option instead of discovering the issue after the floor is done.
This applies not just to room doors, but also cupboards, sliding doors and even appliances that need to roll out, like dishwashers.
Planning for those extra millimetres saves you from the frustration of beautifully finished floors that stop your doors from moving properly.
