In colder regions or even in cool corners of buildings, exposed pipes – especially those carrying water – can suffer in low temperatures. Water inside can get very cold, and in extreme cases, it can freeze and expand, stressing or even cracking the pipes.
Insulating them with foam sleeves, wrap, or other suitable materials helps keep the temperature more stable. It doesn’t heat them, but it slows heat loss, reducing the chance of freezing. It also helps hot-water pipes stay warm a bit longer, which is a small comfort and efficiency bonus.
If a frozen pipe bursts, the damage can be severe once things thaw. Floors, walls and belongings can get soaked quickly. A bit of insulation is cheap insurance against that kind of sudden disaster.
It’s one of those precautionary steps that seems unnecessary until the one winter you really wish you had done it.
